The EPA publishes the reported compliance volumes of the major volume fuel retailers to provide transparency about how compliance with the Biofuels Act 2007 (the Act) is measured.

The Act mandates that the ethanol contained in all petrol sold must equal 6% of total petrol sales.

The published compliance volumes for petrol are determined based on what proportion of all petrol sold was ethanol. The calculation estimates the amount of ethanol contained in E10 and E85, adding those amounts together, and comparing the total ethanol volume with the total volume of petrol sold. This percentage is then compared with the 6% ethanol mandate.
