Hunter River Salinity Trading Scheme Performance Report 2024–25.

In June 2025, Rix’s Creek Mine reported a discharge from an uncapped borehole. The discharged water flowed overland into a dam and then into Stonequarry Gully, which runs into a tributary of the Hunter River. Following the incident, Rix’s Creek Pty Ltd capped the borehole and reinstated operation of the pump to reduce the likelihood of recurrence. At the time of the incident Rix’s Creek was a non-discharging scheme participant (credit holder with no licenced discharge point). In September 2025 the EPA fined Rix’s Creek Pty Limited $30,000 for the water pollution incident and released a media statement.
