Off the road tyres
Off-the-road (OTR) tyres are heavy-duty tyres designed for demanding off-road conditions. They are widely used across industries such as mining, agriculture, aviation and logistics.
OTR tyres present a significant waste management challenge due to their large size, composition and disposal practices. NSW generates approximately 24,600 tonnes of end-of-life OTR tyres each year. Around 9-11% are recovered, compared to around 90% recovery for passenger, truck and bus tyres.
The Carbon Recycling Abatement Fund plans to undertake the following initiatives to enhance the management of waste OTRs in NSW.
Initiatives overview
Initiative | Description |
---|---|
Off-the-road (OTR) tyre research partnership | The EPA will partner with industry to research the economics and logistics of reprocessing and remanufacturing OTR mining and heavy vehicle tyres, informing options to address stockpiling and burial of tyres and overcome barriers to their remanufacture |
Test and scale approaches for OTR tyre processing | The EPA will support Tyre Stewardship Australia-led initiatives to test and scale proposals for OTR processing |
New and updated government material specifications for increasing waste tyre content in road making | The EPA will partner with NSW Government agencies to fast-track new and updated material specifications to build demand for tyre-derived crumb rubber content in asphalt for state and local level road construction |
