Role of planning authorities
NSW planning authorities regulate contaminated land that is not 'significantly contaminated' through the planning and development process. These lands do not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment under the current, approved use of the land.

Record of notices
The EPA triggers assessment and remediation of significantly contaminated land by sending written notices to those responsible for cleaning up the contamination. The EPA makes these notices, which include preliminary investigation orders, available to the public through the record of notices.
