Themes and topics
The NSW State of the Environment (SoE) report is prepared every 3 years by the EPA as required by section 10 of the Protection of the Environment Administration Act 1991. These reports assess the condition of NSW’s environmental trends, successes and challenges using the latest government data and peer-reviewed scientific research, and are independently reviewed to ensure transparency.
The first SoE report was published in 1993 and has since evolved to include more detailed and interactive content. Each SoE report aims to provide credible, robust, statewide environmental information for the NSW Government, industry and the community.
Most states and territories of Australia produce their own detailed State of the Environment reports. At a national level, this reporting is conducted every 5 years by the Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
