The Better Waste and Recycling Fund provides funding to local councils and regional groups of councils to make it easier for their communities to recycle more and decrease the amount of waste sent to landfill. Available to local councils and groups of councils that pay the waste levy, the fund supports a broad range of projects to improve recycling, engage communities, reduce waste generation, tackle littering and illegal dumping, and contribute to achieving the NSW recycling targets.
The Better Waste and Recycling Fund began in 2013-14, providing $68.8 million over four years to local councils and regional groups of councils. With the extension of Waste Less, Recycle More (2017-2021), an additional $39 million over four years has been allocated to the Fund.
Developed in consultation with local councils, this program has streamlined administration that aligns with council priorities, planning and budgetary cycles. It will support longer-term strategic projects, individually tailored by local councils or groups of councils to meet their communities' needs.
