Grants for Wood Heater Regulation Implementation

Up to $15,000 is being made available to individual NSW councils under the implementation project for the Clean Air Regulation Amendment 2015.

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) is proposing amendments to the current wood heater regulatory framework in NSW to give local councils powers to introduce additional controls on wood heater installation.

The proposed amendment to the Protection of the Environment Operations (Clean Air) Regulation 2010 will incorporate:

  • a new Schedule of additional controls that councils will be able to choose to implement
  • updated Australian/New Zealand Standards for wood heaters which set more stringent emission limits and new efficiency limits.

Information on the new Regulation can be found at the page: Consultation on the wood smoke control framework

The Wood Heater Regulation Implementation Project aims to provide assistance to councils that decide to adopt the proposed restrictions on installation of wood heaters in their local government areas. Those councils may receive up to $15,000 to implement the Regulation amendment, including alignment of planning instruments with the Regulation requirements, developing approval procedures and community awareness campaigns.

The EPA is inviting expressions of interest from councils to participate in one or both of the following project options:

  1. Development of council policies and procedures; and
  2. Community education materials and campaigns.

Councils that would like financial assistance to implement the new Regulation in their local communities may obtain an expression of interest form and other information from Mr Trevor Solomon on telephone 9995 6087 or email [email protected].

The closing date for expressions of interest is Friday 31 July 2015.
