Locomotive class register

The locomotive class register is comprised of:

Locomotive classes that were operating on the NSW Licensed Rail Network prior to any approval being required through the Environmental Protection Licenses issued under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 and Pollution Control Approvals issued pursuant to the former Pollution Control Act 1970 (“Introduced prior to approval process”);
Locomotive classes that were approved under Pollution Control Approvals issued pursuant to the former Pollution Control Act 1970 (“Approved under previous legislation”);
Locomotive classes that were approved through the approval process in the Environmental Protection Licenses issued under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 (“EPA … Approved”).

If a rolling stock operator wishes to operate a class of locomotive on a Licensed Rail Network other than a class of locomotive listed on the locomotive class register, they must obtain written approval from the EPA prior to operating a locomotive of that class. From 5 August 2020, approval is subject to compliance with noise and air emission limits as outlined in the Rolling Stock Operator licences.
