Save winter waste and go for taste!

Since our last edition, the Love Food Hate Waste team has been busy partnering with 1Million Women at their Love Earth Festival garnering a spot on morning television. They also bring timely tips for saving food waste over winter or any other season.

More than 2,000 people attended the Love Earth Festival at Carriage Works on 25 May and the Love Food Hate Waste stand was one of the most popular, sharing tips on managing food waste – and photo opportunities with our giant fruit props.

    Winter food saving tips

    Soup's up!

Soups, stews and other comfort food are making an appearance on many dinner tables during the winter months. They are not only the perfect remedy to warm us up in winter but are also perfect for using up ingredients we have at home, meaning no more rushed trips to the shops.

To get on board, take a look in your fridge and pull out any wilted veggies and grab that can of beans that has been sitting in your cupboard for a while and make a lovely soup for dinner.

Stay in food fashion this season!

In winter, many fruits and vegetables are coming into season. To help remind you of what’s in season the EPA’s Love Food Hate Waste team has created this handy seasonal food guide which features recipes from Harris Farm Markets with food that is in season and features in their imperfect produce section. Download your copy from the Love Food Hate Waste website.

    Save some for later

Winter meals are often also good for cooking in bulk or making extra serves frozen for an easy meal later. Simply freeze the meals in either family or single serve portions and defrost in the fridge when you need them. Remember to heat until they are steaming hot before serving. Also remember to add a label with what you have cooked and the date, so you know what you have. Pop a reminder in your phone so that you don’t forget you have a delicious meal waiting for you in the freezer.

If you’re feeling inspired take a look at these other great tips on our website. Share your tips or recipes for loving your food this winter via our Love Food Hate Waste Facebook page.

Love Food Hate Waste is a NSW Government initiative funded through the waste levy.
