Read the latest NSW State of the Environment report

Published every three years by the EPA, the State of the Environment report outlines the health of our environment – including land, air, water, ecosystems and urban environment – at a statewide level. It provides the community with definitive information to understand how the NSW environment’s health is tracking. 

Positive results recorded in the 2021 report include a drop in greenhouse gas emissions and an increase in the size of national parks and nature reserves. Data also show NSW has embraced recycling and litter is decreasing. Challenges identified include increasing clearing of native vegetation, poor health of river systems, and increasing threats to animal populations on land and water. 

The EPA produces the report in collaboration with other government agencies and independent experts.  The latest report is the 11th since 1993 and the first to include Aboriginal perspectives and climate change.
