Coffee cup waste is not just a storm in a teacup
Every year 1 billion disposable coffee cups end up in landfill sites across Australia and in NSW 300 million have the same fate, causing significant environmental impact.
Disposable coffee cups have very short life spans, and when you consider the many resources such as energy, water and raw materials used to create and transport them, they should be replaced, with reusable vessels.
You can help solve this major environmental problem by advocating for keep cups to be provided to staff in your workplace. Brighten up the idea by asking staff to pledge to use their keep cup and their photo taken with it. Post these photos to show that everyone is doing their bit.
Talk to colleagues and seek out champions who can help set a target and run your campaign. Then negotiate discounts at local cafes for staff who bring their keep cups.
Celebrate your success by conducting a monthly audit of disposable cups that end up in the bin to ensure your efforts maintain momentum. Follow @NSW_EPA for more information on waste and what you can do to reduce it.
