Preventing contaminated land

The EPA has initiated a series of proactive programs to prevent operational premises from becoming future contaminated sites, in partnership with industry and local government. Preventative programs to date have focused on industries such as service stations and marinas; and dry cleaning, car wrecking and galvanising premises.

The preventative program seeks to reduce the number of contaminated sites in NSW by developing guidance for specific industry sectors.

Industries

Petroleum storage sites

The underground petroleum storage systems (UPSS) regulation aims to ensure that petroleum storage sites adopt best practice in the design, installation and ongoing maintenance and monitoring of UPSS.

Marinas

Best practice measures to prevent contamination at marina sites (PDF 424KB) include an auditing tool to assist owners and operators to improve environmental practices.

Dry cleaners

Managing dry cleaning waste provides best practice measures for the storage, handling and disposal of dry cleaning solvents and other wastes.

Car wrecking premises

The EPA audited a number of car wrecking and dismantling sites in 2014 and guidelines are being considered to prevent soil and groundwater contamination at operating premises.

Galvanising premises

The EPA audited a number of galvanising sites in 2016 and guidelines are being considered to prevent soil and groundwater contamination at operating premises.
