Radiation Guideline 7: Radiation shielding design assessment and verification requirements

Radiation Guideline 7: Radiation shielding design assessment and verification requirements sets out the minimum shielding assessment requirements for premises where:

  • radiation apparatus (i.e. diagnostic imaging apparatus, radiotherapy apparatus) are to be installed
  • sealed source devices are to be used or installed
  • radioactive substances are to be used or stored.

It is intended for the guideline to become mandatory for new premises where radiation apparatus, sealed source devices or radioactive substances are kept or used. The guideline does not apply to existing installations or premises where shielding is already in place unless there are changes to the existing building, equipment or the use of surrounding areas.

The guideline was prepared by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) in collaboration with the NSW Radiation Advisory Council.

Note: The accreditation of certified radiation experts for the purposes of assessing shielding requirements as set out in the guideline is currently being considered by the EPA.
