Interruption to some council waste and bin collection caused by flooding
Unprecedented flooding and heavy rains have significantly affected essential transport and landfill infrastructure in NSW, which has impacted some household and business waste collection services.
As a result, the EPA has been informed by the waste industry that some council red-lid bin collection services in Sydney’s north, south, inner west and eastern suburbs may be interrupted and not collected at their usual times.
Residents should keep an eye on their council websites for updates to services and businesses should contact their service provider.
The NSW EPA is assisting councils and the waste sector, which are working together to address the issue as quickly as possible. The NSW EPA has approved a number of temporary measures to help industry continue operating flexibly in this difficult situation including
- permitting the Woodlawn landfill to operate on Sunday
- extending the minimum amount of waste that can be stored at certain transfer stations, before being taken for final disposal
- extended the operating hours at the Lucas Heights Landfill
The NSW EPA has also been liaising with the Transport Management Centre about the southern rail line, which is crucial for waste transport, and was reopened on Wednesday 16 March.
We appreciate there may also be some associated impacts with delayed waste collections such as odour. We thank the community for their understanding and patience in this extraordinary time brought about by the impact of these floods.
