Sampling Design Guidelines for Contaminated Land

The EPA has updated the Sampling Design Guidelines for sampling of contaminated land and is now seeking stakeholder and community feedback on the drafts.

The sampling design guidelines reflect current legislation and best practice and provide local and state government officers and environmental consultants with a best practice approach to sampling potentially contaminated land.

They include a guide to best practice approaches (in two parts) such as the number of samples to be taken, types of sampling strategies to use, statistical analyses methods to interpret results and provide worked examples.

The EPA encourages feedback from stakeholders on the updated draft guidelines to help improve the sampling design and analysis of potentially contaminated land in NSW. Stakeholders can have their say on the consultation website at or by providing submissions via email to

The consultation period will be open from 21 September until 8 November 2020.
