Aboriginal Communities Waste Management Program

Fourteen Local Aboriginal Land Councils across NSW will receive $329,000 as part of the NSW Government’s efforts to improve waste management in discrete Aboriginal communities – former mission and reserves.

The funding for the Aboriginal Communities Waste Management Program will be split between the fourteen communities for round one. The grant recipients are outlined in the table below.

The four year $4 million program has been developed in partnership with the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA), Aboriginal Affairs NSW, the NSW Aboriginal Land Council, Local Government NSW, NSW Health and NSW Rural Fire Service.

The program aims to reduce bulky waste and litter, stop the illegal dumping of waste, and work with Local Aboriginal Land Councils to develop effective waste management systems tailored to each local community’s needs.

The Aboriginal Communities Waste Management program has been divided into three stages. With stage one now complete, the program will commence stage two Community engagement where community rubbish management plans will be developed. The third stage will see the implementation of the community rubbish management plans.
