The EPA is enhancing its environmental compliance activities by trialing a more comprehensive approach. The initial pilot was with the wood preservation industry.
The pilot built on and integrated the EPA's formal compliance audit and licence review processes. In addition to assessing compliance with existing requirements, the EPA reviewed industry best practice to encourage improved environmental performance. The approach included consultation with industry, local government and the community during all stages of the process.
The wood preservation sector
The EPA licenses wood preservation works that treat or preserve timber using chemical substances (containing copper, chromium, arsenic, creosote or any substance classified in the Australian Dangerous Goods Code) and that have an intended processing capacity of more than 10,000 cubic metres of timber per year.
- The industry is licensed across a number of EPA regions (North Coast, Hunter, Southern Tablelands, South West and Central West).
- There are 11 licensed premises.
- There are a range of environmental issues arising from the industry, relating to chemicals, air, water and land.
- There are potential benefits for environmental improvement beyond EPA licensed activities as there are several premises which fall below EPA licensing requirements. Local councils currently regulate these premises.
- The industry has not been the subject of compliance audit or licence review recently.
