Waste wise events

What is a waste wise event?

Large-scale public events can generate a high volume of disposable materials. A waste wise event incorporates purchasing and packaging policies, waste and recycling collection systems, and clean-up practices that aim to divert the maximum amount of material from being sent to landfill.

Research shows 87% of event attendees want the event they are attending to be clean and free of litter, and support waste wise practices and want well-organised waste and recycling services.

Major events in Sydney have demonstrated this diversion figure can reach up to 75% by recycling cardboard, paper, food and drink containers and composting organic material such as food scraps, paper plates and biodegradable cutlery.

Waste Wise Events Guide

The Waste Wise Events Guide (PDF 2.4MB) offers advice and resources for event organisers, stallholders, council staff and venue owners to help plan and implement an effective waste management and recycling program for your next event. It provides clear guidance on the steps to take before, during and after an event.

Once your event is finished, carry out an audit to estimate how much waste was diverted from landfill.
