National Television and Computer Product Stewardship Scheme

The NSW Government is committed to the development of a national television and computer recycling scheme.

In November 2009, Australian Environment Ministers approved an industry-led scheme for the collection and recycling of end-of-life televisions, computers and computer peripherals across Australia. NSW worked with the Commonwealth Government, other jurisdictions and the television and computer industries to develop the national television and computer product recycling scheme.

The scheme will allow free drop-off of televisions and computers at collection sites and will be progressively rolled out nationally over 18 months from 1 July 2012 to 31 December 2013. The scheme aims to achieve an 80 per cent recycling rate by 2021.

The scheme is designed to build on existing recycling services that are already available. It will start slowly and build up over time. Unwanted televisions and computers can be disposed of now by:

  • asking second-hand shops or a charity if they will take them (if they are still in working order)
  • passing them on to friends or family
  • using local council or other recycling services (contact your local council for more information)
  • storing them out of the weather until access to the scheme is available in your area.

A factsheet describing the scheme is available online.

Collections will be carried out by Commonwealth Grant Approved co-regulatory arrangements. Approved co-regulatory arrangements are shown in the table below. These companies are able to deliver services under the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme.
