All about Discovery walks, talks & tours

When you go exploring in a national park, how much do you see? Here's a quick quiz:

  • Do you know which native plants will cure a sore throat?
  • Could you spot a sugar-glider's nest, or pick out the croak of a red-eyed tree frog?
  • Are you aware of the fragile plant and animal habitats to avoid walking on?
  • What do you know about the formation of the landscape, from the Dreamtime to the present day?
If you didn't score so well, you're probably missing out on the many secrets hidden behind the Australian landscape. You can uncover those secrets with the NPWS Discovery program.

Discovery walks, talks and tours give you a fantastic insight into the unexpected delights of national parks. Developed and led by specialist Discovery rangers, these fun activities will teach you more about the environment which surrounds you, and about the history which created it.

There are a wide range of Discovery activities, including:

  • Spotlight walks, where you'll uncover the hidden world of nocturnal wildlife
  • Relaxing canoe tours in estuaries and freshwater environments
  • Night-time poetry and spooky stories in historic sites
  • Coastal strolls, where you'll learn about the fragile sand dunes and seek out the inhabitants of rockpools
  • 4WD vehicle tag-along tours, where you'll enjoy stunning views and wide open landscapes
  • Springtime wildflower walks, led by local experts who know all the best spots
  • Snorkelling tours through the rich underwater environments of marine parks
  • Walks through ancient landscapes to discover more about our amazing geological environment.
Discovery also gives you a unique opportunity to learn about the culture and traditional lands of Aboriginal communities around the State. Through the Aboriginal Discovery program, Aboriginal people are conducting professional guided tours around parks and reserves in areas like the Blue Mountains, Jervis Bay, Sydney's southern outskirts, and parts of western NSW. The guides interpret their cultural heritage, celebrating the close connections between Aboriginal people and their traditional lands.

Whether you are five years old or 95, there are affordable Discovery activities for everyone. Most run during holiday periods, but some activities run throughout the year. Tours and activities can be tailored to suit the needs of particular individuals or groups, such as schools, social clubs and conferences.

Discovery tours have limited numbers, to ensure a great experience for everyone. This means that bookings are essential. By booking early you will avoid disappointment.
