Energy Future: 6 step action plan
Premier Morris Iemma and the Minister for Climate Change and the Environment, Verity Firth, have announced a $150.5 million Energy Efficiency Strategy (decc20080300energyfuture.pdf, 863kb) to help families and businesses save money and help the environment. The package will reduce the growth in energy use and the State's greenhouse gas emissions.
Public comments on the design of the NSW Energy Efficiency Trading Scheme are now available. Views represented in these submissions are those of the respondents and not necessarily those of the NSW Government.
Working with industry is a major part of DECC's strategy for improving the sustainability of business in NSW. Partnerships such as the Sustainability Compacts and the Sustainability Advantage are not about self-regulation, they are about establishing co-operative arrangements that foster business innovation and continual improvement.
A strong and innovative regulatory framework is still needed to set standards and prohibit environmentally damaging behaviour.
The Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 (POEO Act) is the main NSW environmental legislation covering water, land, air and noise pollution and waste management.
The Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Act 2001 encourages industries to take voluntary action to reduce the environmental impacts of their products; if performance does not improve the industries may be subject to mandatory extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes.
EPR involves producers taking more responsibility for managing the environmental impacts of their products throughout their life. This aims to keep products and materials out of the waste stream and reduce their environmental impact.
The NSW Extended Producer Responsibility Priority Statement 2005-06 identifies the 7 top priority wastes as computers, mobile phones, office paper, paint, plastic bags, televisions, and tyres. Industry sectors involved in producing these and 10 other 'wastes of concern' are expected to take on 'product stewardship' measures to take responsibility for the impacts of the product at the end of its life.
