Radiation Advisory Council - vacancies

The Radiation Advisory Council is set up under the Radiation Control Act 1990 (the Act), and comprises 16 members appointed by the Minister for Climate Change and the Environment.

The Council is currently seeking nominations for the following positions:

  •  deputy to the person who represents community interests
  •  an expert in naturally occurring radioactivity
  •  deputy to the expert in naturally occurring radioactivity
  •  a medical specialist in radiology
  •  deputy to the medical specialist in radiology
  •  an expert in non-ionising radiation
  •  deputy to the expert in non-ionising radiation
  •  a radiographer with expertise in human diagnostic radiography
  •  deputy to the radiographer with expertise in human diagnostic radiography
  •  a legal practitioner with at least 7 years standing
  •  deputy to the legal practitioner with at least 7 years standing
  •  a medical physicist
  •  deputy to the medial physicist
  •  a radiation oncologist
  •  an expert in health physics.

The object of the Act is: '…to secure the protection of persons and the environment from exposure to harmful ionising and non-ionising radiation to the maximum extent that is reasonably practicable, taking into account social and economic factors and recognising the need for the use of radiation for beneficial purposes'.

The functions of the Council include advising the Minister on:

  • the administration of the Act and Regulation measures to prevent or minimise the dangers arising from radiation
  • other functions as are conferred or imposed on it by or under the Act.

The Council also provides advice to the Department of Environment and Climate Change NSW (DECC) about licences, registrations and accreditation under the Act.

The term of office is determined by the Minister and is normally 3 years, with members being eligible for re-appointment. A member is entitled to be paid remuneration and allowances as determined by the Minister.

Applications are therefore invited from people interested in being considered for appointment to the Council and who hold appropriate qualifications. The Government is strongly committed to increasing diversity on its government boards and committees and encourages women, people from non-English speaking backgrounds, people with disabilities, people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent, and young people to apply.
