Draft regional pest management strategies
May 2007
Pests are among the greatest threats to biodiversity throughout Australia. In New South Wales they have been identified as a threat to 657 out of 945 (70%) of species, populations and communities listed under the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995; more than any other process except the destruction and disturbance of native vegetation. Minimising the impacts of pests on biodiversity is the main objective of the pest management by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).
In New South Wales the main pest management priorities for the conservation of biodiversity are focussed on threatened species and endangered ecological communities, and are identified in the Threatened Species Priorities Action Statement, individual threat abatement plans and reserve plans of management. Pest programs are also integrated with other park management programs such as fire management.
