Greening our fleet
DECC is the largest single land manager in NSW and as such has a large fleet of vehicles to undertake a wide variety of tasks from transporting staff, maintaining infrastructure and even fighting fires. Many of these tasks require heavy duty vehicles or four wheel drives for use in field operations and these are often diesel powered.
Despite these operational constraints the DECC has been implementing the NSW Governments Cleaner Government Fleet program with some success. The program focuses on vehicles less than 4.5 tonnes GVM and efforts have focussed on our vehicle passenger fleet.
The DECC's fleet of hybrid electric/fuel vehicles continues to grow and wherever practical, large vehicles are being replaced with smaller 4-cylinder vehicles.
Better use of public and active transport has also resulted in several pool vehicles not being replaced at the end of their lease, which has contributed to reductions in the Department's environmental impact.
