The conservation status of marine parks
Marine parks are declared over existing land tenures. This means that they can co-exist with national parks and nature reserves. At the Solitary Islands, the marine park overlaps part of Yuraygir National Park and nature reserves of the Solitary Islands. Such areas have 'double protection'.
On the other hand, marine parks cannot co-exist with aquatic reserves and these reserves are revoked by the declaration of a marine park. The move from aquatic reserve to marine park enables all flora and fauna within a park — including fish, whales, seabirds and marine vegetation — to be protected.
Marine parks are established under the Marine Parks Act and the Marine Parks Amendment Act.
