Southern Wilderness Assessment

This wilderness assessment was part of the Southern Comprehensive Regional Assessment (CRA) of forests. It incorporated most of the South Coast, the NSW Alps and the southern parts of the South-West Slopes.

The assessment had two objectives:

  • to provide information on wilderness values to the CRA process
  • to fulfil the state government's obligations under the Wilderness Act.

The NPWS identified 200,484 hectares of wilderness within the Southern CRA Region of NSW. The assessment report was on public exhibition from 5 March to 28 May 2001. The public exhibition provided an opportunity for the community to comment on the assessment process and the declaration options presented in the report.

You can download the report below, together with the the colour posters which accompanied it on public exhibition.
