Northern Wilderness Assessment

The wilderness assessments in north-eastern NSW were undertaken as part of the government's forestry reforms and in response to proposals from interest groups. In all, some 24 areas were assessed, covering 475,876 hectares.

The NPWS identified 241,579 hectares of wilderness within north-eastern NSW. The assessment report was placed on public exhibition from July to September 2001. The public exhibition provided an opportunity for the community to comment on the assessment process and the declaration options presented in the report.
