Did you know that any liquid – from milk and oils to hazardous chemicals – has the potential to harm the environment?

A suite of resources has been developed to assist trainers when conducting education and training for the storage and handling of liquid substances.

Storing and Handling Liquids: Environmental Protection training manual, will help industry and local government to better manage environmental, legal and safety responsibilities relating to liquids. The kit includes sections on legal obligations, site management, incident management and spill response.

The Storing and Handling Liquids: Environmental Protection kit includes the following resources (which can be downloaded below)

  • a training plan
  • a 90-slide training presentation
  • Case studies
  • Practical activities and photos
  • a user-friendly participant manual
  • a site action plan

Why was the training program developed?

Storing and Handling Liquids: Environmental Protection was developed in response to compliance audits conducted by DEC during 2004/2005. These audits highlighted the need for education and training in all industry sectors about the management of liquids.

Components of the kit

Planning the training program

The training plan outlines a one day program but can be readily adapted for modular delivery over several sessions or condensed into a half day program.

Delivering the training program

The comprehensive trainer’s presentation includes 90 slides with photos and illustrations to ensure clear and effective learning.

Case studies for six companies prosecuted for spills of liquid substances are available for use in the training program. Each case study demonstrates the issues involved and the reasons for different outcomes.

A range of activities are provided which aim to enhance participants’ understanding of both engineering controls and management measures that can be used to prevent spills and other incidents.

A3 size photos are available to accompany each of the activities provided.

For the participant

The Participant Manual is a user friendly guide which covers the key topic areas relating to management of liquids, including site management, storage, handling, waste management, incident management and spill response.

An A3 size site action plan is provided to enable organisations to plan a risk management approach to managing liquid substances.
