Regional illegal dumping squads and programs

The RID program contributes to combating and preventing illegal dumping. The program supports local councils by using a regional approach to illegal dumping and coordinating proactive deterrence measures across participating member councils.

Western Sydney RID squad officers are focused on investigating illegal dumping.

Host organisation: Penrith City Council

Areas covered: Blacktown, Blue Mountains, Camden, Fairfield, Penrith, and The Hills council areas.

Illegal dumping focus areas include

  • domestic household waste dumped on nature strips in residential areas
  • construction and demolition commercial operators transporting waste to illegal waste facilities
  • construction and demolition operators utilising vacant land and council reserves to illegally dump waste

Hunter Central Coast RID program

Host organisation: Hunter Joint Organisation

Areas covered: Central Coast, Cessnock, Dungog, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Mid-Coast, Muswellbrook, Newcastle, Port Stephens, Singleton and Upper Hunter council areas.

The Hunter Central Coast RID program began in 2023, taking over from the former Hunter Central Coast RID squad.

This program is co-funded by the EPA and member councils. The aims are to

  • identify and patrol illegal dumping hotspots
  • investigate illegal dumping incidents and take action against offenders
  • track down illegal landfills
  • identify changes and trends in illegal dumping across a regional area
  • collaborate with the EPA, SafeWork NSW, and NSW Police to run illegal dumping education and compliance campaigns

Southern Councils Group RID program

Host organisation: Illawarra Shoalhaven Joint Organisation

Areas covered: Bega Valley, Eurobodalla, Kiama, Shellharbour, Shoalhaven, Wingecarribee, Wollongong, and Wollondilly council areas.

Illegal dumping focus areas include

  • illegally dumped residential waste and misuse of bulky waste council services
  • illegal dumping incidents on bush land areas
  • council targeted waste education programs
