Water

DECC's survey, Who cares about the environment in 2006, reported that the people of NSW see water conservation as one of our most important challenges. In fact, water was listed as a top environmental issue by more people than any other area of concern.

The survey revealed that most of us recognise that individuals also have an important role to play in managing water. Household water use accounts for 70% of Sydney's total water consumption and, nationwide, households are the second largest user of mains water after agriculture.

DECC provides a wide array of resources and incentives to support sustainable water use by the community.

  • DECC offers financial assistance for water conservation at home through the rainwater tank rebate. The rebate is part of the NSW Government's $310 million Climate Change Fund and is available for the installation of any new rainwater storage system for residential properties in NSW. There are even bigger savings to be made if your tank is connected to your toilet or washing machine.
  • Our Environment - It's a living thing website provides waterwise tips to help conserve water around the home. There is also advice for choosing water efficient products, designing water efficient homes and maintaining waterwise gardens.
  • Water for Life outlines the NSW Government's long-term plan to secure Sydney's water future and provides help to householders to save and recycle water.

For more information on DECC's broad range of programs and policies dealing with water management, including water flows, beachwatch, salinity and water pollution, see the water topic area of this website.
