The NSW Biodiversity Strategy

The first NSW Biodiversity Strategy was released by the state government in 1999. It created a framework for a range of government agencies to work together, over a period of 4 years, to conserve biodiversity in NSW.

About the first Strategy 1999 - 2003

The first NSW Biodiversity Strategy enabled government, local communities, researchers and industry to work together to increase our knowledge and capacity to conserve biodiversity across NSW. Guided by the goal “to protect the biodiversity of NSW”, the Strategy presented a series of objectives under each of the categories listed below.

A summary under each category provides a snapshot of projects supported by the first NSW Biodiversity Strategy, with links to available guides, publications and information systems. However, it represents only a small fraction of the many conservation initiatives continuing across NSW.

These achievements have helped NSW contribute to meeting the objectives of the National Strategy for the Conservation of Australia's Biological Diversity. More information about the National Strategy can be obtained from the National Strategy for the Conservation of Australia's Biological Diversity website.

The first NSW Biodiversity Strategy were a result of the hard work of many dedicated individuals and government agencies. The NSW Department of Environment and Conservation coordinated the implementation of the Strategy in cooperation with the:

Towards a new Biodiversity Strategy

The decline of biodiversity continues to be one of the most challenging environmental issues facing NSW, particularly in light of the potential impacts of climate change.

In 2003, major reforms to NSW’s natural resource management and land-use planning secured the integration of biodiversity conservation into broader government programs.

NSW has since renewed its commitment to achieve better outcomes for biodiversity and is preparing a new Biodiversity Strategy as detailed in the NSW State Plan, as part of its Environment for Living theme.

The Department of Environment and Climate Change and the Department of Primary Industries will be working together to draft a new NSW Biodiversity Strategy. As a first step, a discussion paper will be released to encourage community and stakeholder input. It will be posted here once available.
